New figures have highlighted that firms can enjoy major savings by migrating to virtualized server environments.
Research by Business Insights has estimated that companies can enjoy annual savings of £2,500 per server by using virtualization, while the consolidation of physical servers can also lead to savings of £2 million over a three-year period.
It was also suggested that desktop virtualization can offer savings of around £78,000 for every 1,000 PCs run on such systems, reports eWeek Europe.
Steve O'Donnell, managing director of the Enterprise Strategy Group, told the website that four out of five companies now use some form of virtualization.
He added: "Recognising that having loads of servers running at five percent utilisation is a waste, virtualization has become a key driver for energy efficiency."
Earlier this year, Citrix announced the launch of a new solution designed to support the use of desktop virtualization.
The Ready Open Desktop Virtualization program has been created to make it easier for firms to migrate to such technology.
