Businesses should not get into the mindset that virtualization begins and ends with servers, it has been claimed.

Writing for Forbes.com, IT experts Sidney Smith, David Convery and Mike Burke said many firms can also "benefit" from desktop virtualization, as it offers strong options in terms of centralised management and disaster recovery.

They also explained that employees are able to connect to such systems "anywhere in the world", which could be useful for home workers.

"Single disk imaging technologies allow a large reduction in the storage requirements, eliminating the superfluous duplication of copies of the exact same standard desktop build," they added.

"Other technologies, such as application virtualization, further drive simplified and centralised management, enhancing return on investment."

Brian Gammage, an analyst for research body Gartner, recently told the Wall Street Journal that desktop virtualization is one of the IT world's "hottest" trends and will be a big issue for many in the near future.
