The use of virtualisation technology can improve the efficiency of managed data centres, it has been claimed.

According to IT support services provider Nebulas Solutions, customers will realise immediate benefits after installing the hardware.

The firm stated that a virtual infrastructure can automatically handle peaks and troughs in server demand.

Managing director at the group Nick Garlick commented: "Virtual machines already offer cost savings, but by adding this level of automatic provisioning, systems can become far more responsive to the demands of the business."

Owen Cole, technical director for application provider F5 in the UK and Ireland, added that the ability to automatically control a virtualised infrastructure brings increased flexibility, while freeing IT resources to focus on competitive innovation.

Earlier this week, IT industry analyst IDC claimed expenditure additional to managed storage cooling and power are driving up the cost of the service.

Research by the group found the world's installed base of external storage makes up approximately 60 per cent of all enterprise storage-related spending, including software, power, cooling, administration personnel and services.
