The speed of different virtualisation hypervisors has become the subject of debate after one provider of such products claimed that its offering operated at three times the speed of its rival.
Oracle's statement that its new Oracle VM Hypervisor, launched on November 12, was "three times more efficient than existing products from other vendors" has been taken as an implicit jibe at the products of rival VMware, reports computerworlduk.com.
VMware blogger Steve Wilson responded by saying that the multiple of three only referred to the percentage short of 100 per cent native speed the hypervisors operated at, this being 99 per cent for Oracle and 97 per cent for VMWare, the performance differential thus being much smaller.
Parag Patel, vice-president at VMware, said speed of roll-out, number of system admins required for operating and energy saving were the real benchmarks of virtualisation technology.
Another company offering virtualisation services, Unisys, has this week signed a deal to provide such services as part of an £8 million outsourcing project for the London arm of the De Beers diamond mining company.
