Saving money, energy and time are the main benefits of virtualisation solutions, according to one expert.
In an article published on IT Director, Laurie McCabe, a partner at research and consulting firm Hurwitz & Associates, said that adopting virtualisation can help firms make single-purpose servers into multitasking ones and turn multiple servers into a "computing pool" that can adapt flexibly to altering workloads.
She added that virtualisation solutions can reduce the need for as many physical servers, meaning firms can reduce both the costs of running unused servers and the energy required to power them.
Finally, Ms McCabe stated that utilising virtualisation solutions can reduce the workload involved in desktop management.
"Managing, securing and upgrading desktops and notebooks can be a hassle. Desktop virtualisation solutions let you manage user desktops centrally, making it easier to keep desktops updated and secure," she said.
Recent research by Fasthosts Internet suggested that firms may turn to virtualisation in the coming months as the current economic climate is prompting a quarter of those questioned to reduce their server spend.
