Server virtualization 'offers environmental benefits'

Businesses that are looking to improve the environmental credentials of their IT operations should consider server virtualization, an expert has claimed.

Owen Cole, technical director of F5's UK and Ireland operations, has suggested that one of issues stopping companies from introducing green computing strategies is that potential impact such tactics could have on their bottom line.

  • However, in a column for IT Wales, he added that the emerging technology can offer both benefits for companies looking to simultaneously reduce costs and boost their eco-friendliness.

    "Reducing power consumption and management expenses, and increasing efficiency of existing resources through consolidation and virtualisation decreases both the impact of devices on the environment as well as on IT's increasingly tightening budget," he explained.

    Recent research by Fujitsu found that 46 per cent of IT managers think server virtualization will improve their company operations in the near future.
