IT organisations have claimed that server virtualization is a top spending priority for them over 2010.
New research by Stratus Technologies revealed that 47 per cent of the companies polled are set to focus on the concept over the coming months.
In addition, other priorities for 2010 are expected to be disaster recovery and the upgrading server hardware, with 25 per cent of respondents claiming they will address the latter within the next 18 months.
Roy Sanford, chief marketing officer of Stratus, said: "By its very nature, virtualization burdens the underlying hardware by placing more applications on fewer servers. At the same time, server refresh cycles are lengthening.
"Ensuring uptime reliability, especially in light of executive expectations, has never been a more urgent concern than it is in today's technology landscape."
A recent study published by the Dell'Oro Group revealed that server virtualization is driving Ethernet switch sales.
The switch market is expected to return to growth in 2010.
