The London School of Economics and Political Science conducted a study on cloud computing in the smart phone and aerospace services industries in Germany, Italy, the UK, and U.S. from 2010 to 2014.  The results indicate that adoption of cloud computing in both industries creates significant employment opportunities.

Research showed that the EU lags somewhat behind the U.S. in cloud adoption, with North America accounting for 60 per cent of expenditures for cloud services worldwide in 2009.  The U.S. is expected to remain the largest area for growth in cloud services for the immediate future, with anticipated growth in smart phone service positions expected to increase from 19,500 in 2010 to 54,500 in 2014.  The researchers speculated that the disproportionate increase in U.S. jobs may be due to lower cost for electricity in America compared to Europe.

The report showed that cloud computing will create opportunities in cloud application development and infrastructure for both the U.S. and EU as employment shifts away from distributed data processing facilities. According to the report, “Our analysis shows jobs shifting from distributed data processing facilities to consolidated data centres, resulting in a drop in data processing jobs overall as efficiency gains occur especially through public cloud services”.
