Small and medium-sized enterprises will have to alter their IT skills base as cloud computing continues to grow in popularity.

According to Greg Bouncontri, chief information officer (CIO) at Pitney Bowes, there is expected to be a huge shift in the skillset needed to implement successful IT infrastructure projects.

Speaking at Wired magazine's CIO Leadership Forum, in the US, Mr Bouncontri was reported by PC World as saying: "The role of the IT person is changing."

His views were echoed by a number of other keynote speakers at the conference, including Saad Ayub, CIO at Scholastic, who claimed that IT professionals will be expected to be more innovative.

He was reported as saying that this new outlook would have to be juggled with the traditional roles of successful data and process management.

The change in IT personnel skillsets will no doubt be driven by the shifting responsibility for cloud security, which will have to strike a balance between vendor-centric security provision and end-user precautions.
