The majority of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can no longer justify building their own data centres, so migration to the cloud is the only option for firms that want the trappings of modern IT - such as high performance and scalability. Michael Stonebraker, a database expert and co-founder of VoltDB, claimed that scalability was the preserve of big players, which is why the data centre market is controlled by a few very large firms - like Google and Amazon.

Speaking to GigaOM, Mr Stonebraker said that the huge cost associated with setting up, running and maintaining a data centre were enough to put all but the largest firms off going it alone. "Sooner or later, if you're a small guy, there will be huge incentive to move to the public cloud. You've either got to be really big or run on someone else's data centre," he told the news provider.

Earlier this year, Cisco predicted huge growth in cloud computing traffic in the coming years, suggesting that traffic would triple between 2010 and 2015 as firms shift even mission-critical apps and services to the cloud.
