Hybrid VDI can help cut costs

Centrally managed virtual desktop infrastructure can be improved if the VDI is executed on the end-user's PC rather than being delivered over the internet, according to virtualization expert John Glendenning. He claimed that central execution means 20 times the amount of equipment is needed to deliver a solidly-performing virtual desktop environment.

Mr Glendenning, senior vice president of sales and business development at Virtual Compute, said end-user execution also boosts virtualization performance. Speaking to IDG, the infrastructure expert noted: "The reality is that the server hosted VDI has not delivered as expected. I would say that 2011 has been the year when the market realised that VDI may not be the answer to all of the customers' needs."

He claimed that another benefit of ensuring delivery is local is the flexibility it offers, claiming that many of the limitations of centrally-operated VDIs are easily overcome.

Mr Glendenning's comments echo those made by Citrix earlier this week that virtualization is still some way off maturity and that providers should be wary about mis-selling the technology, as doing so will inevitably result in client disappointment.
