Internet giant Google is predicting rapid growth in the small and medium-sized business (SMB) cloud computing sector - suggesting that uptake of the IT infrastructure solution will be "huge" in 2012. And when Google makes a prediction about the future of IT, it is difficult to dismiss it as an off-the-cuff remark that won't prove true.

In a blog post for the company, Amit Singh, vice president of Google Enterprise, said that only ten per cent of SMBs have deployed cloud computing to date but the next 12 months will see this cloud adoption number rise dramatically.

He claimed that pushing business processes into the cloud makes sense because the infrastructure was becoming much more adaptable than the traditional PC. Mr Singh said: "[Cloud computing will] benefit businesses of all sizes."

"Cloud, mobile and social ... are the areas driving our investments for 2012 and transforming the way we work," he concluded.

Recently, Michael Stonebraker, a database expert and co-founder of VoltDB, claimed that migration to the cloud is inevitable for small businesses. Speaking to GigaOM, Mr Stonebraker noted that the big players like Amazon and Google would start to shift their focus towards this key market.
