Flexibility is one of the key benefits of cloud computing, allowing businesses to adapt quickly and easily to unexpected challenges. According to the founder of cloudonomics.com, Joe Weinman, increasing capacity fourfold at the drop of a hat is now possible with the pay-as-you-go service model offered by cloud computing providers.

Speaking to PC World, Mr Weinman said: "Let's say you're a retailer who 11 months out of the year might be able to use their own data centre to do things. For one month [you might want] to be able to double or triple or quadruple capacity."

He claimed that this allows businesses to avoid the legacy problem of wasted server capacity, as they no longer have to fork out for equipment that will meet the highest possible demands but ends up sitting idle the majority of the time.

Mr Weinman said that businesses can benefit from virtualization technology for a number of other reasons as well - not least the improvements to interoperability. This has become increasingly important as firms try to integrate multiple devices into their existing infrastructure.

Recently, Cisco claimed that mobile encryption is becoming increasingly important as virtualization - including desktop virtualization - becomes the norm.
