A former Citrix employee has claimed that desktop virtualization is still some way off maturity and requires a certain level of technical expertise if it is to be implemented effectively. This could point to an increasing demand for outsourced infrastructure solutions that leave management and maintenance to a third party.

Speaking to CRN, Simon Crosby, who used to head up the data centre and cloud division at the computing firm, said that many vendors are pedalling desktop virtualization as a mature product, but this could result in business customers' expectations not being met.

"People have to learn about how to manage hypervisors, buy servers, buy storage, and buy networking equipment. And they have to get comfortable with managing all this stuff prior to getting VDI up and running," Mr Crosby told the news provider.

Recently, Phil Wainewright, vice-president at EuroCloud, claimed that successful outsourcing of IT infrastructure to the cloud can free up business time and allow companies to shift their focus away from implementation and maintenance.
