A number of companies are now beginning to find the concept of desktop virtualization "very interesting", according to an expert.

Chris Hammans, managing director of IT solutions provider Pano Logic, said the technology is likely to become very popular with firms due to the range of benefits it offers.

Writing for CRN UK, he explained that desktop virtualization can improve the delivery of computing systems, as well as help to cut operating costs.

However, he added that providers need to be fully aware of the needs of their customers if they are to ensure the service is a success.
"The first stage is about acquiring as much information about the customer as possible," he explained.

"You need to understand every aspect of their desktop setup. Ask how they are set up, what mix of workers use desktops and how much are they spending on desktop deployment."

Diptarup Chakraborti, principal research analyst at Gartner, recently claimed in a column for Express Computer that desktop virtualization has become "a new growth opportunity" in the IT world.
