Data centre automation is quickly becoming the cornerstone of modern IT infrastructure and more than a third of the businesses that Information Week recently surveyed claimed they are already using automation technology. The news provider also found that of the 345 companies it quizzed about virtualization and data centre automation, a similar amount (32 per cent) had a project already underway - ready for the new year.

One of the key reasons cited by chief information officers (CIOs) for the adoption of business process automation in the data centre was improved performance - particularly when it came to service requests. CIOs were also impressed by the reliability of the technology and its ability to reduce errors.

Information Week also found that many CIOs believe that without automation, virtualization would not be able to achieve its key aims of improved scalability and flexibility.

Recently, Ed Laczynski, Datapipe's vice president for cloud strategy and architecture, claimed that increased scalability was one of the key reasons businesses were migrating to the cloud - particularly software developers. However, he noted that reliability and security were just as important as the cost savings afforded by cloud computing.
