Customer relationship management on demand and virtualisation are likely to be among the top ten technology priorities for global firms during 2009, it has been claimed.

According to IT industry analyst Gartner, document management, managed IT security technologies and managed storage are all likely to benefit from heavy expenditure despite overall technology spending expected to increase by just 0.16 per cent over the year.

Regarding technology spending, Mark McDonald, group vice president and head of research for the organisation, commented: "Every chief information officer will start at a different place, facing unique challenges and setting his or her own agenda to marshal the resources needed to make the right decisions and deliver results across the enterprise."

Mr McDonald added that during 2009, executives will face challenging global economic conditions that have not existed for more than 50 years.

Last week, analyst IDC claimed email marketing and customer relationship management on demand will be among the largest program allocations by technology companies by 2010.
