The benefits of cloud computing should not be overlooked in the current economic climate, it has been claimed.

According to data center services provider iomart Group, a centralised computing infrastructure that can be easily accessed via the internet is vital for firms with an online presence.

Chief executive of the group Angus MacSween commented that the world is now split into two economies, one which is the offline and on online, and the online one is expanding despite the world's economic problems.

"For today's business, the benefits of cloud computing, of a centralised computing infrastructure that can be easily accessed via the internet, are just too compelling to ignore," added Mr MacSween.

This week, Steve Garnett, chairman for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at business information services provider salesforce.com, commented that the computing industry is trying to restrict take up of cloud computing because major IT firms are not yet ready to take advantage of the market.
