IT company Citrix has made a series of improvements to the scalability of its desktop virtualization solutions.

The firm's XenDesktop 4 with FlexCast technology has been verified to deliver up to 125 virtual-based desktops, as well as 500 hosted shared desktops and 5,000 local streamed desktops from a single physical server.

It is believed that such improvements allow companies to deliver virtualized desktops to more users at a lower cost.

Iddo Kadim, director of virtualization technology for Intel's Data Center Group, said the performance was both "significant and compelling".

He added that the system offers "enterprise IT the opportunity to balance cost, control and flexibility".

Earlier this month, software developer 2X launched a new solution designed for use with desktop virtualization technology.

The company's VirtualDesktopServer Version 8 product is designed to allow businesses to publish applications and virtual desktops, while they can also improve their user thin client configuration management.
