IT heavyweights Cisco and Citrix have formed a new desktop virtualization alliance that is expected to improve the deployment of large IT infrastructure solutions. The firms are also hoping that the partnership will result in significant virtualization optimisation - particularly when it comes to virtual desktop deployments over wide area networks (WANs).

Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) for Citrix XenDesktop will boost connection speeds between desktops and mobile devices by as much as 70 per cent. It will also allow for the doubling of the number of virtual desktops that can be deployed by reducing bandwidth requirements by up to 60 per cent.

Sumit Dhawan, group vice president and general manager of the Citrix Receive and Gateways group told IT Pro Portal: "Enterprises are rapidly adopting desktop virtualization for mainstream use in order to enable a mobile workforce and they are looking for their strategic partners like Citrix and Cisco to deliver end-to-end integrated solutions."

Citrix recently overhauled its XenServer 6 product range by incorporating Open vSwitch technology and streamlining installation and management.
